Neck Pain Q & A

What causes neck pain?

The human neck consists of seven small vertebrae that must carry a head weighing 14-16 pounds. While balancing that weight, the neck is also incredibly flexible. Small vertebrae and lots of movement while balancing a heavy load is a recipe for pain and injury.

The actual pain associated with the neck ranges from general soreness to a sharp, stabbing pain in one spot, and pain that radiates into your shoulders, arms, and head. You may also experience headaches or tingling that radiates down your arm.

Some of the most common causes of neck pain are:

Injuries

Whiplash is the most common neck injury, but sprains and strains due to overuse, repetitive motion, sports injuries, poor ergonomics, and falls are also frequent culprits. Injuries that damage your neck can cause pain in your shoulder, headaches, and numbness or tingling in your arms.

Disc herniation

Between the vertebrae are discs that cushion the bones. When a disc herniates, or bulges out between the bones, nerves are pinched which causes neck pain.

Subluxation

Subluxation occurs when vertebrae in the neck become misaligned, moving out of their natural positions. As a result, the bones pinch nerves, causing inflammation and pain.

How does chiropractic care help with neck pain?

Dr. Donnelly always begins with a complete examination, including imaging to diagnose the root cause of your neck pain. Chiropractic treatment for neck pain uses gentle techniques designed to improve mobility, reduce pain and stiffness, relieve muscle tension, and restore the natural alignment of your neck and spine. Your treatment plan may also include therapeutic massage, structured exercise, and other chiropractic options.

Is chiropractic care effective for neck pain?

Chiropractic care relieves pain, improves functioning, and generally makes life better for people with neck pain. In fact, chiropractic treatment for acute neck pain is more effective than medications to relieve pain and relax muscles.

Neck pain is often a secondary condition that develops from problems that occur in your jaw or elsewhere in the spine. Dr. Donnelly doesn’t just treat a symptom in your neck. He examines your whole body and determines whether your neck pain comes from muscle strain, misalignment, or other problems beyond your neck.

The goal of neck pain treatment at Think Chiropractic in Chamblee isn’t only to alleviate your pain, but also to improve the stability of your neck so that you can prevent neck problems in the future.
