Migraines and Headaches Q & A

What are the different types of headaches?
There are many different types of headaches and each one has unique characteristics, such as where the pain is located and how long it lasts. Chiropractic care relieves most headaches, but it’s especially beneficial for the following:

  • Tension headache: caused by stress and anxiety; located in forehead or both temples
  • Cervicogenic headache: begins in bones and soft tissues of the neck, then radiates into the head and shoulders; causes limited neck movement and pain when you move
  • Migraine headache: intense, throbbing pain accompanied by sensitivity to light, sounds, and smells

What do you need to know about migraines?

Migraine pain often builds for one to two hours, then stays at an intense, throbbing pain for up to 72 hours. Most people have migraines on one side of the head, but you may feel the pain anywhere around your head or neck.

Migraine headaches cause other symptoms, such as:

  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Loss of appetite
  • Numbness or weakness

After the migraine pain subsides, you may feel exhausted, confused, have neck pain, and ongoing sensitivity to light and sound. It often takes up to 24 hours before you begin to fully recover.

What causes migraines and headaches?

Headaches have a long list of causes. For example, they develop from exertion, allergies, sinus infection or congestion, tension, stress, hunger, and caffeine withdrawal.

The exact cause of migraines isn’t known. Experts believe they may involve changes in blood flow or the release of chemicals that cause inflammation and pain. Genetics likely play a role, as people with migraines may inherit the tendency to be affected by migraine triggers, such as lack of sleep, fatigue, bright lights, weather changes, stress, foods, smells, and medications.

Can chiropractic care help migraines?

Clinical trials show that chiropractic adjustments help reduce the number of migraines and their severity when they occur. Chiropractic care may prevent migraines, as well as reduce the need for medications used to treat migraines.
